Dreaming the Impossible Dream: Canada to Join the European Union?
It looks like Canada's prime minister, pretty boy Justin Trudeau, is having a hissy fit.
The poster boy for woke progressive liberalism's failures, he was mocked by US President Trump, who suggested that he could become "governor" when Canada became the 51st state!
Despite superficial outward appearances and similarities, Canada IS very different from the United States, politically, socially and economically.
Those facts have been overlooked by President Trump, and despite his bombastic rhetoric on the subject, Canada would simply not fit in well with the United States as a constituent part.
The political structure of Canada resembles the European parliamentary models, and it would be a complicated procedure to revamp them to fit the US's internal political structure.
There are also the problems of French-speaking Quebec and the autonomous native Canadian territories to consider.
President Trump's euphoria over his re-election perhaps caused him to ignore those factors as well.
Or perhaps he was simply joking.
If that wasn't bad enough, Justin's own Liberal Party in Canada wanted him to step down as Prime Minister and party leader, given the increasing strength of the Conservative Party there.
The Liberals feared that their connection to Justin would cost them control of the Canadian government in the upcoming Fall elections.
Early in January, facing the mounting pressure of his unpopularity, Justing DID announce his resignation as Liberal Party Leader (and therefore as Prime Minister) and would stick around until his party chose a new leader.
Then he prorogued the Canadian Parliament, which effectively prevented it from enacting legislation.
This was an act of desperation which everyone saw through.
In the meantime, he still jets around the globe, playing as one of the world's leaders, although his reign is winding down.
Perhaps the most childish thing that he has done is suggest that Canada wishes to join the European Union as a counterpoise to President Trump's suggestion that Canada become the 51st US state!
And the current head of the European Union, Ursula van der Leyen, is absolutely delighted to entertain such an idea!
It would shore up her position as leader of an increasingly polarized and disintegrating European Union, provide a distraction from the losing war in Ukraine, gain access to Canadian natural resources, such as oil and natural gas, show solidarity among woke progressive liberals in the face of the increasing popularity of the Right and it would allow her to thumb her nose up at US President Trump.
The latter would appeal to her.
There are a multitude of problems regarding Justin's plan.
For one thing, he will only be around for a few months, too short a time to see entrance into the European Union through.
The Conservatives are poised to take control of Canada's government in the Fall, and they are nationalists who are opposed to alienating Canada's sovereignty to anyone, whether it be the US or the European Union.
They do not have to follow through on anything Justin might be playing at now.
Then there is Canada's position in the British Commonwealth to consider.
Would that fit in with the European Union, especially since the United Kingdom left it?
Or would Canada have to leave the Commonwealth to enter the European Union?
And wouldn't that require the consent of all of Canada's provinces?
I daresay that most Canadians want to remain independent of both the United States AND the European Union and that Justin's broaching the subject of joining the European Union is his last-ditch attempt to play at being a global big shot.
I hope that he enjoys it for the brief, gaudy hour that it lasts for before he plunges into well-deserved oblivion.
And Canada will remain a sovereign state.
