From Russia, With Love!
Watching the leaders of the European Union and their associates scamper to organize ways to protect themselves in the wake of US President Donald Trump's deserting them would almost be amusing if the consequences weren't so catastrophic.
As stated in previous blogs, the success of the European Union has always been predicated upon one thing: The USA.
It was American money, war materiel and men that allowed for the EU's prosperity and quick expansion into the Eastern European states that were once part of the Soviet bloc.
Similarly, those states were quickly admitted into NATO, the military alliance originally created to protect its member state from Soviet aggression.
It gave the EU a false sense of security and the belief that the US would always provide support for them almost unquestioned.
Given this mindset, the EU never imagined that they would have to protect themselves, hence their lack of coordination among its individual states' military and a complete lack of standardization of its weaponry and war materiel.
The USA would take care of it if push came to shove.
Then, POW!
Donald Trump was re-elected to the Presidency of the US in November 2024.
And the world, especially Europe, panicked.
President Trump was unimpressed with the continued existence of NATO during his first term in office and made it clear that the US might leave that organization.
That will probably happen this time around.
Then initiating peace talks with Russia's Putin over the heads of both the EU and Ukraine's Zelenskyy, was further proof of his disdain for America's European allies, seemingly agreeing with all of Russia's demands regarding ending the war in Ukraine.
While I agree with a good many of President Trump's domestic policies, I fail to see how bolstering Russia in its war of conquest and strengthening its position in Europe will benefit the US.
His die-hard apologists claim that President Trump is taking Putin's side to wean him away from China, which they see is the greater threat to America.
But I fail to see how giving Putin a free hand in Ukraine and ultimately Eastern Europe will ultimately benefit America, especially since Putin cannot be trusted.
While they may all grumble about President Trump, despite his campaign promise that he could end the war in Ukraine in one day, he can't.
And hasn't.
Only one man can end the war and that man is Putin.
And Putin doesn't care how many people die in his war of aggression, whether they be Russian soldiers or Ukrainian civilians.
But it is this appearance of the coziness between Trump and Putin and Trump's ceasing all aid to Ukraine that has finally caused the European Union to spring into action, but it is much too little, much too late.
The EU and its associated states cannot immediately replace American financial and military might in the region, which will give Putin plenty of time to continue his war of destruction in Ukraine.
Putin WILL absorb Ukraine into Russia and has claimed that Ukrainians are NOT a distinct nationality, but merely a branch of the great Russian race and do NOT require a separate state.
President Trump has already stated that Ukraine may or may not be Russian one day, so he is clearly not disputing Putin's claim.
The small Baltic state of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania will probably be the next to go, as well as Moldova.
And there really wouldn't be much that the EU could do about it, given the disarray evident in NATO, its lack of support from President Trump, the political instability present in some of the EU's member states and associated allies.
And the lack of adequate funds necessary to hurry rearmament.
Yes, the EU has finally seen the light about protecting themselves independent of the US and ultimately of NATO.
But they will soon be paying the price for not having seen it a good deal earlier.
They had better start learning to speak Russian.
Do svedonia!
I always enjoy your perspective! Thank you 👍🏻
