Russia's President Putin: "Mine is the Power!"
During President Trump's re-election campaign, he stated that he could end the war in Ukraine in one day.
He didn't.
But he could have.
After his inauguration, President Trump could have told Russia's President Putin to stand down and submit to a peace deal of America's devising or risk the US providing Ukraine with unlimited money, war materiel and means of mass destruction, giving Ukraine permission to use such weapons against Russian territory and civilian targets.
Just like Russia is doing to Ukraine.
Only he didn't.
Instead, Trump demanded that Ukraine come crawling to him to beg his intervention and accept whatever peace plan Trump and Putin would devise, regardless of the long-term consequences.
Even worse, President Trump agreed with Putin's demands regarding the end of the war and the future of Ukraine, which would ultimately result in that nation's absorption into Russia and the extermination of Ukrainian culture.
Which is NOT within the interests of the Ukrainian people, the European Union or even Turkey, none of which wish to see Russia's position strengthened in the region.
So, the war is dragging on, because it was always within Putin's power to end the war, which he does not want to do short of total military victory.
How could all of this happen?
President Trump, while not the first, is the greatest of the modern Populist politicians, but that doesn't render him immune from the shortcomings of the type nor of the madness of the Caesars.
He made a miraculous political comeback after his defeat in the 2020 presidential election and won slightly more than half of the electorate in 2024, but he truly doesn't know how to control the world that he wishes to dominate.
After four years of the wussiness of the Biden regime, it was a breath of fresh air to have a dynamic president back in the seat of power.
But...
President Trump is truly ignorant of the shift in the global economy since his first presidency as well as the art of diplomacy for which he has substituted bullying tactics against friend and foe alike, with less than stellar success.
While arrogance and rudeness have always been the prerogative of the strong, President Trump has failed to understand the equal and opposite effect it can have.
Diplomacy is generally intended to strike a balance between conflicting powers that they can live with, not to bully one into complete capitulation.
I agree with most of President Trump's domestic policies and some of his international agenda, but to make enemies of erstwhile friends and important trading partners seems completely asinine, as is strengthening enemies against friends.
As for uncertain states like Turkey and India, they have long seen their national aspirations opposed to American goals and have been increasingly pursuing their own agendas, unrelated to and uncoordinated with those of the US.
Turkey's Erdogan has often stated that the EU and other aligned nations should distance themselves from the US.
And threatening our old enemy Iran has merely resulted in that nation flipping the US the bird two days ago.
Indeed, President Trump's actions seem schizoid: pursuing an isolationist policy while actively attempting to interfere in global politics and pursue a territorial expansionist policy.
Sort of like Russia's Putin.
Perhaps that's why this bromance is so evident, and President Trump is kissing President Putin's ass: They are too much alike and President Trump also appears envious of Putin.
Having arranged all of these meetings to end the war with Russian officials in Saudi Arabia, to which the EU, Turkey and Zelenskyy were NOT invited, President Trump accomplished nothing more than for Russia to reiterate its demands, which means a complete capitulation on the part of Ukraine.
This week, President Trump sent a flunky to present Putin with plans for a 30-day ceasefire, to which Ukraine DID agree to.
Putin did not.
He is thinking about it and will reject it.
As British Prime Minister, "Sir" Keir Starmer put it, "The ball is in Putin's court."
But it always has been.
Putin could have put an end to the war in one day simply by ceasing hostilities and calling for a peace conference between Russia and Ukraine.
Putin didn't want to.
Nor is he rushing to grasp at anything President Trump is holding out to him because he doesn't need to.
All Putin needs is to delay...and keep the hostilities going, killing more people and absorbing more Ukrainian territory until Zelenskyy cries "Uncle!"
It is Putin and not President Trump who is in control of the situation, which is most embarrassing for President Trump.
Unrequited love is a bore.
