"Sir" Keir Starmer's Summit to Aid Ukraine: A Study in Absurdity.
"Sir" Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, hosted a summit meeting in London on Sunday, the purpose of which was to come up with proposals to end the war in Ukraine that would leave that nation sovereign and independent.
It was a study in absurdity, because the proposal that this meeting ultimately arrived at was to be presented to US President Donald Trump for his approval.
That won't be forthcoming any time soon.
President Trump and his vice president publicly humiliated Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday and the latter quickly left the White House and America to head to London for Starmer's summit meeting.
President Trump made it clear that Zelenskyy had better come back begging for him to "settle" the war in Ukraine...under Russia's terms, which would effectively end Ukraine's independence.
President Trump is clearly uninterested in Ukraine's survival or that of NATO or even of the European Union, which is why he has refused to consider US troops being stationed in Ukraine to uphold any eventual peace agreement or even a cease-fire.
Russia's Putin was delighted. Some western "democracies" were aghast. Some states in the European Union (Slovakia and Hungary) cheered Trump on.
It was in this atmosphere that Starmer held his summit meeting.
And their proposal?
For starters, that those state attending the meeting were committed to a peace that left Ukraine sovereign over its territory and independent of foreign internal interference.
They committed themselves to financial and military support of Ukraine.
They committed themselves to providing troops to provide Ukraine with security after a cease-fire or peace deal was struck.
They stated that both the European Union and Ukraine MUST have places at the table for ending the war.
Starmer went on and on how much a lasting peace would depend on the US and hoped that the US would find their proposals "acceptable."
Ursula van der Leyen, head honcho of the European Union stated that they needed to protect themselves and were implementing plans to do so.
Given the cumbersome, time-consuming bureaucracy that exists in the European Union, that won't happen anytime soon or have any real effect on the war in Ukraine.
It is a case of much too little, much too late.
Furthermore, Ursula pointed out that four of the states at the summit were not members of the European Union: Canada, Norway, the United Kingdom (which was formerly a member of the EU) and Turkey (which would like to be a member of the EU).
What is more interesting is that three EU member states were NOT invited to the summit: Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
Those small states will most likely be the object of Putin's next act of aggression, once he absorbs Ukraine.
This is even more obvious when one considers Russia's demands to end the war in Ukraine.
Ukraine is to accept its territorial losses.
Ukraine is NOT to join NATO or the EU.
Ukraine will not be allowed to have foreign troops safeguard the peace.
Ukraine will have to limit the size of its military.
And, this is the most important item of Putin's demands, that NATO vacate all of the states in Eastern Europe, the ones that had previously been part of the Soviet Union's Warsaw Pact!
Even more ridiculous were the attendance of Canada's Trudeau, France's Macron, and Germany's Olaf Scholz. They are effectively lame duck politicians in their own countries and really can't promise anything that their successors will be bound to.
As for "Sir" Keir Starmer himself?
He has made himself the most unpopular UK Prime Minister in decades, starting five minutes after his party won the general election, and it is doubtful that he will be able to influence his Parliament to come up with any effective aid packages for Ukraine, given the chaotic state of the UK's internal politics and financial state.
President Trump remained silent at first, not even recognizing that Starmer's summit meeting was occurring.
Until today.
Apart from stating that his originally proposed tariffs against Canada and Mexico would be implemented after all, President Trump announced the suspension of all aid to Ukraine.
The world acted surprised. It shouldn't have been.
That would be the most effective way to bring Zelenskyy and the European Union to heel.
Frankly, President Trump wants no interference from anyone while he works out a deal with Putin, so the pious hopes of Starmer and the heads of state who attended this summit meeting are clearly delusional.
While I agree with many of President Trump's domestic and international proposals and agenda, I think that allowing Putin to recreate the Soviet Union is a serious mistake for the future security of the United States.
If President Trump is angling for a Nobel Peace Prize by giving Ukraine and Eastern Europe to Putin, he had better forget it.
That won't provide a lasting peace anywhere.
And neither can the European Union or NATO.
None of them are strong enough or influential enough to change President Trump's mind.
That is why this meeting was a waste of time.
And I daresay the attendees knew it, too.
But what a photo-op it provided!
