Easter Bunnies Need Good Homes!

It is that time of the year again.

Easter is upon us.

It when Easter Bunnies mate with chickens, who then produce hard-boiled, festively colored eggs.

Easter Bunnies then add those eggs to baskets also filled with chocolate and other candies, which they then give to children.

Mothers then make egg-salad out of the Easter eggs, while children quickly get a sugar high and start bouncing off of the walls because they ate way too much candy.

Sometimes the Easter Bunnies hide the eggs, prompting children to engage in contests to see how many eggs they can find.

As I understand it, Christian religions hold Easter in high regard for its spiritual connotations, but that is not the subject of this blog, nor do merchandisers promote that aspect on their advertisements for Easter-type accessories.

Yes, it is all great family fun.

What isn't fun is what pertains to Easter Bunnies themselves.

Some people insist on giving Easter Bunnies as gifts.

Yes, they are cute and lovable, but they are not toys.

Easter Bunnies are live animals. As such they require responsible people to house, feed, maintain, care for and love them.

The key word here is "responsible."

Most recipients are usually unprepared for them and don't have what is necessary to keep and maintain them.

After all, it's a surprise!

After the initial delight in owning an Easter Bunny wears off, they soon begin to resent the constraints such a pet puts on their time and pocketbook, because owning a live animal requires occasional visits to the veterinarian.

Resentment leads to neglect and abuse, and despair for the poor animal involved.

It resembles the behavior of many baby mamas and baby daddies, who make bastard children as easily as breathing, then get bored with them, expecting society to take care of them when things go badly wrong.

The only options pets have are animal shelters, which are unpleasant, or finding a new, more responsible home.

My advice to people who want to give live Easter Bunnies as pets is: DON'T!

Give them a chocolate Easter Bunny or a plush one.

If you ARE a responsible person, remember to lavish your love and affection on your pet Easter Bunny. He will enjoy it and respond in kind!

And you can send a small contribution to your local animal shelter to cover for the people who didn't follow my advice and ended up sending unwanted Easter Bunnies there.
