My, My, My! The European Union Has Finally Grown a Pair!
Of balls, that is!
Who woulda thunk it?
Less than a week ago, US President Donald Trump was at his most bellicose, claiming that he would have Greenland, regardless of what anyone said.
The Donald did NOT rule out a military invasion of that island.
Furthermore, he slapped more tariffs against 7 European states that loudly opposed his intentions regarding Greenland.
Those 7 nations sent a token number of military personnel to show solidarity with the native Greenlanders, who do NOT want to be part of the United States.
That fact pissed off The Donald more than somewhat, because the European Union had been capitulating to his demands since he returned to the White House last January.
The Donald, as we all know, demands to be obeyed.
Yet, 48 hours ago, The Donald stated that he was ruling out military conquest of the island and its annexation to the United States.
Instead, he supported extending the status quo regarding American military presence in Greenland, which would permit the United States to open more military bases there to "defend" the so-called "free world" from Russian and Chinese aggression.
So, why the turnabout?
Very simple: The European Union finally grew a pair of balls and told The Donald that they would not permit his conquest of Greenland.
They had finally had enough of The Donald's threats and bullying.
The economic trade deal with the US that Ursula von der Leyen was compelled to accept last year was suspended by the European Parliament.
It was an uneven deal that gave the US much and Europe nothing.
Then, the European Parliament dusted off its "Economic Bazooka," which would initiate an all-out trade war with the US, which would do plenty of damage to the already shaky US economy, while not much affecting that of the European Union, which has already embarked on making trade deals that expanded its markets to other parts of the world.
Despite all of The Donald's bluster about his bogus "Independence Day" regarding his imposition of tariffs last year, that has not made notable improvements in the US economy.
In fact, increased spending to maintain the military-industrial complex has pushed the national debt to unsustainable amounts.
An all-out trade war with Europe would be disastrous for the American consumer, which is still dealing with the horrendous after-effects of four years of Bidenism, not to mention the sheer stupidity of The Donald's tariffs enacted against friends and foes alike.
And then there was the hint that Germany would withdraw its hundreds of billions worth of gold reserves currently stored in New York City.
It's just a hint, but such an action would show a lack of confidence in the United States, which would adversely affect its reputation as the financial hub of the world.
Finally, there is The Donald's ego in seeking to win the Nobel Peace Prize, to which he is NOT entitled!
His reputation as a peace-seeker is at odds with his bombing campaigns against Iran and the Houthi rebels in Yemen, as was his military action against Venezuela and the kidnapping of its president, as well as his threats against Colombia's left-leaning president.
Conquering Greenland by force would not enhance his shabby reputation as a peace-seeker.
Nor have his declining ratings in the American political polls reinforced his actions.
So, he was forced to backtrack on his plans to annex Greenland.
For now, anyway.
This was a victory for the European Union.
They stood up against the imperial presidency of The Donald, finally, and won.
Hopefully, they have learned their lesson and will not let down their diligence in the future.
They have grown a pair of balls.
At long last!
