And What Does Larry the Cat Think of it All?
Larry the Cat, Mouser in chief at Number 10 Downing Street, has just welcomed his seventh Prime Minister in his 15 years in residence there.
That is no mean feat.
Far more popular than any of the official political residents at Number 10, Larry the Cat has seen it all.
From the yutz parade of Conservative Prime Ministers to the black comedy of "Sir" Keir Starmer's quick rise and fall, despite the historic victory of the Labour Party in 2024, Larry the Cat has endured and survived them all.
So, what does he make of it?
Probably not much.
The Disunited Kingdom has been a state of political, social and economic crisis even before Larry's residence there, but it really only came to a head with the asininity of Brexit from the European Union and the ineptitude of the Conservatives' handling of COVID.
Their inability to provide any real solutions to the resultant cost of living crisis cost the Conservatives control of the British Government in the 2024 general election, which was the worst electoral defeat in their entire history.
The British people rejected the ineptitude of the Conservates and provided the Labour Party with an historic landslide victory at the polls.
That's how "Sir" Keir Starmer, as Labour leader, got to be Prime Minister.
This election was more about punishing the Conservatives than it was any real belief in the "pie in the sky" promises of Labour, which Labour promptly reneged upon.
Within minutes od taking control of the government, the "Party of the People" began to screw over its core group of constituents: the poor, the working class, the elderly, youth and the infirm with increased taxation, fees and regulations, while providing in return clear examples of corruption, insensitivity to taxpayers and scandals which would usually nauseate more than titillate.
Starmer even wanted to replace Larry at Number 10 with his own cat!
That was something you couldn't do to Larry!
And the British people objected to that, too!
Larry was simply too much of an icon, a much-beloved celebrity that people could not or would not do without, unlike most politicians, including Starmer himself.
Most glaring was the connection between Labour leaders and convicted, now deceased pedophile, human trafficker and international influencer Jeffrey Epstein.
THAT scandal is what finally brought down "Sir" Keir Starmer's government when faced with the challenge of another Labour leader, Manchester's popular mayor Andy Burnham.
Nobody outside of Manchester ever heard of Andy Burnham prior to six months ago until his threat to challenge Starmer for leadership of the Labour Party made him world famous.
Despite Starmer's tortured attempts to prevent that, the once unthinkable possibility became reality last week: He resigned as party leader; Burnham was elected party leader almost immediately.
Yesterday, the anti-monarchist "Sir" Keir Starmer resigned as Prime Minister to King Charles III, who, ten minutes later charged Andy Burnham with forming a government in his name.
Burnham promptly went to Number 10 making a speech chock full of glittering generalities about unity and solving the Disunited Kingdom's problems.
It was a blah speech that really meant nothing, apart from trying to soothe a disgruntled electorate that had been calling for Starmer to resign for over six months.
It was not noticed if Larry the Cat attended the new Prime Minister's first public address.
Why should he have been present?
He's heard it all before.
Seven times now.
And nothing has gotten better.
Nothing has changed except the Prime Minister.
Often.
So often in the last few years that the British government has become an object of mockery throughout the world.
But Larry remains, the only symbol stability and continuity the British government has.
And, if it is true that cats have nine lives, he very well might outlast the next crop of bungling British politicians, whatever their political affiliation.
One can only hope so!
